Partner: Maastricht University

Maastricht University has a strong international orientation, reflected in its international student body and extensive international research. Its educational approach and learning methods are based on the principle of Problem-Based Learning (PBL).

Courses

The courses offered by the two universities cover a wide range of topics and complement each other very well. The double degree is integrated into the regular master's programmes. It includes courses from both universities and is based on credit transfer.

During your first year, you will attend courses at Maastricht University. Depending on your individual interests, you can choose between a quantitative and a qualitative track as well as between different specialisation tracks. You can consult the curriculum on the Maastricht website where you will find detailed information on the different tracks offered including course descriptions.

In your second year, you will study a methods course that complements the track you chose in your first year: If you chose the qualitative track in Maastricht, you will now follow a quantitative methods course in Cologne, or vice versa. The module names of the other courses can be found in the study plan above. Module descriptions can be found in the module catalogue. Each module usually offers several different seminars. To get an impression of the seminars offered in the current academic year, you can have a look at the KLIPS campus management system and click on the relevant module.

As part of the programme, you will write a master's thesis, which you will start developing in your first year and complete in your second year.

Benefits of studying a double degree

The experience of studying abroad is one that many people remember as the most enriching, eye-opening and inspiring time of their lives. Studying in two university systems gives you the opportunity to experience different study cultures, broadening your academic horizons, your network and your career opportunities. As well as providing you with an excellent academic programme, we want to give you the chance to gain international experience, meet people from many different parts of the world, develop intercultural skills and learn to navigate new challenges. We believe that you will grow tremendously as a person through this experience.

Career opportunities

The programme prepares you for positions where strong research skills are required. This includes positions in an international research environment. You will be qualified for professional research positions in a variety of sectors. Graduates of the programme work in the institutions of the European Union, public bodies, non-governmental organisations or the private sector. We have graduates working as researchers, policy advisors, analysts, in communication, consultancies or as journalists. The research-oriented nature of the programme also enables you to move on to doctoral research or research-related work in think tanks. As these careers require familiarity with different academic cultures and an international profile, graduates with a double degree are very well prepared.
